Clinical Experience!
Hi everyone! I am back with exciting news: I had a fantastic experience at clinical this morning. As I said, I am a student nurse at UPenn, working in the maternity unit. Today, I was a part of a c-section! I entered the operating room with the correct PPE and an open mind. While the mother was receiving a spinal prior to the procedure, I did her fingerprint for documentation. Next, I inserted a foley catheter, which was really exciting because it was my first time, and I was successful. Soon after I watched the surgery and it was a moment I will never forget. Watching the baby be born was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, I teared up a little. Once the baby was assessed by pediatrics, I took over and did some assessments myself. I applied medication (erythromycin) in the newborn's eye to prevent any bacterial infections. Also, I administered a vitamin K shot in the thigh, which was very good practice. On top of that, I took the baby's vital signs (temperature, heart rate, and respirations), put a diaper on him, tested his reflexes, and swaddled him to keep him warm. I assisted the family and the baby in the postpartum period by palpating the mother's fundus every 15 minutes and taking the baby's vitals every 25 minutes.
Clinical is off to a great start, as I work hard and learn new skills. Next Wednesday, I am working in the ICU, which excites me because I have a great interest in that unit. Hands-on learning works best for me and I will continue to practice to the best of my ability in order to become a successful registered nurse.
