Happy Halloween!

Hi everyone! Happy Halloween!!!! This is my 5th and final blog and it is crazy to think that there are only about 4 weeks left of school. Time has been flying by this semester. Although school is almost over, I still have tons of homework, exams, and clinical to complete. It will be a full month, but I am sure it will be over in the blink of an eye since I am keeping busy. As far as exam wise, I have been studying almost every week and it becomes very tiring. It does pay off though which is rewarding. Every Wednesday, clinical at UPenn in the maternity unit keeps me busy too. I have assisted on the labor and delivery floor, OR for a C-section, and the ICU. I experience something new every week and I learn so much each time. As far as the nursing home, I have assisted patients with dementia and built connections with the individuals. We have given flu shots, performed head-to-toe assessments, played bingo, assisted with dinner, and overall learned how to take care of a person with ...

Clinical Experience!

Hi everyone! I am back with exciting news: I had a fantastic experience at clinical this morning. As I said, I am a student nurse at UPenn, working in the maternity unit. Today, I was a part of a c-section! I entered the operating room with the correct PPE and an open mind. While the mother was receiving a spinal prior to the procedure, I did her fingerprint for documentation. Next, I inserted a foley catheter, which was really exciting because it was my first time, and I was successful. Soon after I watched the surgery and it was a moment I will never forget. Watching the baby be born was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, I teared up a little. Once the baby was assessed by pediatrics, I took over and did some assessments myself. I applied medication (erythromycin) in the newborn's eye to prevent any bacterial infections. Also, I administered a vitamin K shot in the thigh, which was very good practice. On top of that, I took the baby's vital signs (temperature, hear...

School & Life Update :)

Hi, it has been almost a month since I checked in! I've been flooded with schoolwork and exams during the past couple of weeks. I have taken a Pathophysiology and Medsurg exam earning an excellent grade on both! So far, my hard work has been paying off and I am halfway through the semester. That is crazy to think about. Each morning I wake up, attend class, and complete work throughout the day. Before I know it, the day is over, so I am keeping busy. I am still trying my best to balance school with my social life, which I do mainly on the weekends.  This Thursday I have a Maternity exam, then I have a two-week break from exams, which excites me. Next week, I start in-person clinical for both Maternity and Medsurg! I am so excited to finally get hands-on experience at UPenn and Foulkeways. Two of my roommates have already been at CHOP and their assigned nursing homes and they have seen and learned so much. I am excited to apply my knowledge to the hospital setting and work as a stud...

What makes me happy

Image
It is important to recognize what makes you happy in life. Nursing school can be stressful, and taking time for yourself is a must! I can not believe I am going on week 4 of the semester, but I have done so much hard work for each of my classes. Besides taking 2 exams already, I have been attending class, then doing homework every day. I realized that I needed to take some time to myself and balance my workload with what makes me happy. A few things that I love in my life are my family, my friends, my dog, shopping, music, and so much more. Simply recognizing that although nursing school may be challenging at the moment, I also have so many other amazing things in my life. I do my best to reach out to my friends and family daily because I am living here at school. Knowing that I have a support system that is cheering me through college keeps me motivated and excited for my future!!

About me!

Hi! My name is Savannah Glassey, and I am a junior at Widener University. I am studying nursing and can not believe I am halfway through the program. I am excited to see what the future holds once I graduate and become an RN. Widener has not only given me an education but also lifelong friends. I have enjoyed every semester here so far and I am looking forward to seeing how these classes play out. Also, I am from Bucks County, PA, and live around 45 minutes from campus. Although I am fairly close to school I got a house off campus with 4 other girls who became my best friends. It's so nice because I have a great school and home friends. Leaving my home friends is always so hard because we all go to colleges so far from each other.                                                                ...
